It's great; suits my needs perfectly. It's not as comprehensive as Sibly's or Peterson's, but the more narrow coverage of birds (i.e., birds in Arizona) makes it easier to identify the birds in my back yard. It is laid out by the prominent color of the bird and has nice, detailed photos. It has a small map of AZ on each page showing the season the bird might be seen along with information about size, sex, nests, eggs (with incubation time), migration, food and which other species to compare it when trying to narrow down the identification. The author then writes a paragraph with interesting notes about each bird. He has a list of resources in the back including books, birding hotlines and relevant websites. I'm very happy with my purchase.
Book arranges birds by color making what you are searching for a bit easier to find.It gives you the male, female, and if the female is like the male, then you are given juvenile coloring also.This may not be a complete book, but coupled with others (I prefer American Birding Association Field Guide to Birds of Arizona by Rick Wright)you are pretty much going to find most of the birds you are viewing if you are visiting or live in Arizona.
Very nice sized with good photos. However, it is missing several common birds I see regularly in my Chandler, AZ backyard. An internet search of AZ birds found the third most common bird in my backyard is an Abert's towhee. The bird is not listed in the book. This seems like a major omission for a book on AZ birds.
Having lived in the PNW where we found the companion to this book as extremely helpful, we were pleased when this Field Guide arrived on our doorstop. Now, spending much time in the desert of AZ, we can use this guide to help us enjoy the many birds we see and hear around us.Every household should have this guide for their region within their household to help them enjoy and identify Mother Nature's beautiful birds.
Very nice book. It is color coded which makes it easier to find the bird your looking at. For instance, if the bird you see is red, there is a section of pages that are red for birds that are red in color. It has pictures of the male and female birds and short description of thier characteristics.
We have one for ourselves but have been giving copies as presents. Just the right size for a day out birding or for watching out the window. All of this author's books have been superb. Highly recommend. Easy to use color system.
Being fairly new to Arizona we put out hummingbird feeders and another sock feeder for the goldfinches. Well, we had so many different birds coming around and we were confident in saying "That's a robin!, or That's goldfinch! but not many others. So we got this book and now we can look out the window and identify the birds in our yard. So glad we got this!
Great book for a beginning birder. Great condition for a used book. Lightweight and easy to carry.
