I remember reading this book about the time it came out (mid 80's) and I thought it was amazing. At the end Delany references the sequel he was planning and the name he was going to use and.... years went by and he never wrote it. I wasn't shocked, as while Stars... is an interesting book from an SF perspective, it's clearly a gay SF novel, and the market may not have been strong enough to support a sequel. But it ended with a situation that begs another novel.I recently reread Stars... and I still like it. Am I impressed with it as much as the first time? Not quite, but that may be because I know the plot and it's not quite as ground-breaking when read now as it was 30 years ago. Though if I heard that there was finally a sequel, I'd lunge for it. Having said that, it's light-years better written than so much current "I don't need no stinking' editor" drivel under the SF label. One thing I should mention is that this is neither a "hard SF' nor a "fantasy" novel. It's basically a novel about people set in the future and it's about the people and their interactions. Delany presents some really interesting ideas about how things might work, but he wastes very little time talking drivel about how the Plasmatronic Hyper FluxBuster Drive translates the ship across galaxies. Rather, he takes the SF for granted and uses the powers of the FluxBuster drive to enable interactions that wouldn't otherwise be possible. Most importantly, his primary characters are wonderfully 3D and the characterizations are subtle and deft. Even some of his minor characters are decently done. One more thing: This book does a beautiful job of asking what "alien" is and isn't, without once appearing to do so.
A complicated view of society (even if an overly mathematical one of sexuality) this is the rarest of creatures -- a book I'd recommend even though the sequel was never finished, and the plot therefore never ends right. It is full of so many brilliant scenes and ideas it's worth it regardless.... the dinner party, the box of books -- it's not mundane SF, but it deals with the mundane parts of daily future life in a very insightful way.
In my humble opinion, it is a very challenging book, starting from the elaborate language through the peculiar use of pronouns (I will not reveal the rule so as not to spoil the fun) and finishing with a complex setting built up from myriads of different worlds and their successes or failures at attempts to maintain unity. The reader will encounter a huge number of scenes depicting or at leat suggesting sexual intercourses hetero, hemo and (for the lack of better words) interespecies. Yes, sex is very important in the novel. Yet it is neither vile nor cheap, and the narrator manages to stir things up and finish the scene with a blackout just before the reader would be forced to proceed through physiological details. It is challenges the ideas of gender (yet it does it in a very surprising and intelligent way), it makes you realise how carnal pleasure is important and vital to you (and how beautiful experience it may bring once you accept who you are), it depicts a universe made up of six thousand worlds! It is a beautiful piece of art. I draw pleasure not only from ingenuine ideas about the way the world could be but also (or even mostly|) from the fabulous language Mr Delany emplyed to depict his wonderful yet unsettling world.
There were times when I wanted to put the book down and go to sleep and other h ere time m especially I c o wouldn't put it down. It's deep moisture of granular environmental detail and philosophical musings and riveting exploration of human feeling, thought, and culture are so deep and wonderful. This book will make you think. NOT a light read.
If there is such a genre as social-science fiction, this author is it's clearest and most thoughtful voice. His style makes me feel as though i am a part of his characters' universe. It's not just that i'm getting a clear and vivid description, or even a guided tour. I feel as though i share the mindset of the characters of this reality. This book offers the reader different (and welcome) possibilities of gender, family, society and culture. If you enjoy rich writing that respects your intelligence and offers you something new then you may enjoy this book.
A work of genius. If you're looking for fluff, move on. If you're looking for sci-fi you'll still be thinking about years on down the road, and relish well crafted literary works where words matter, this is for you.
One of the most remarkable things about this novel is that the author foresaw the World Wide Web a decade before it became a part of everyday life.
I read this book many years ago and had to read it again. it is probably my favorite book of all time. totally different from anything I've ever read.
