Just a fair warning: This book does not have any code. It will not teach you how to code an Android menu or title screen; it is purely a design book that examines various design frameworks and templates that have worked for other apps. And it excels at doing so: there are many different designs presented in this book that will give the reader the confidence to not only implement a practical design framework; but also takes you through the creative process of designing a layout and the caveats that come with designing each layout. One of the high points about this book was it's treatment of the differences between iOS screen and android screens. This treatment was so in depth I came out of this book with the knowledge about the differences in the design philosophies of iOS and Android. I was give this book a very high recommendation for anyone that wants a solid introduction on designing an Android layout.
I expected a book on design patterns as defined by Gamma. Instead it's about ux. Poorly named book that doesn't deliver what it claims.
I've come across a number of articles written by Nudelman and have purchase another of his books. This one is excellent. I think that if more programmers took the time to understand the nuances of design covered in this book, the Android app market would be improved by an order of magnitude.
Exactly the kind of book I was looking for. The pictures, the demonstrations, and the discussion were all perfect. If it does nothing, it will stimulate you and get you thinking deeper into the user experience and user interface of your application. Anyone interested in programming for Android should read this before getting started on a serious project. Will be re-reading this for months to come!
The book contains a lot of insights, some of which are pretty obvious. On the whole there isn't a very cohesive theme to the book. There is a lot of do this, don't do this. I would rather have had some larger strategies that these particulars could relate back to. I think the author tried to do this, but not very successfully. There are some good ideas in the book though. I just didn't think it was that great.
This book will teach you Android design in depth, but you'll also learn a lot about designing for iOS and other mobile interfaces.I've worked with Greg and attended his workshops and this book reads like you're learning from him in person. You'll learn tons of specific patterns you can use right away, but you'll also learn principles of design and human behavior and how they lead to the development and adoption of specific patterns. These are the meta lessons that apply anywhere and don't become outdated.The difference between great designers and 'ok' designers is this: Great designers understand why a pattern works and can think critically to solve problems beyond existing patterns when needed. They can innovate when designing in an imperfect world.This book will help you get work done now while helping you become a great mobile designer.
This is my first book on Android pattern design. It has been a helpful reference in my app designs. Like it!
