I discovered this book through an article written by the Author in the New York Times. This is a very thoughtful and thought provoking book, a quick read. I had recently read "Enlightenment Now" by Steven Pinker: this book was a good counterbalance to the also very good read by Pinker.
Based on my life experiences, a lot of people I've encountered are afraid to engage in analysis of religion or religious debates with people of opposing views. It is scary to try and unearth the core of your beliefs and expose it to someone who may outright reject it. This book thoroughly goes through a range of research uncovering the explanations of core beliefs and how they affect day-to-day life without challenging or insulting any side. It compares the religious and nonreligious, discusses the psychological traits of both groups as well as psychological responses to the supernatural, and it opens a dialogue for further discussion between people of different groups. I truly enjoyed the organization of the research in this book, the range of topics, and the push to start your own conversation with people you may not fully understand. I also think it may have even helped me understand my own reactions and thoughts towards the supernatural.
