About the Author
Bruce Tremper grew up skiing in the mountains of western Montana, where his father taught him the basics of avalanches at the age of ten. He was a member of the Junior National Ski Team and the US Ski Team Talent Squad; in 1973, he was NCAA Division Downhill Champion. Bruce’s professional avalanche experience began in 1977 when he did avalanche control for Bridger Bowl Ski Area. He later was director of avalanche control at Big Sky Ski Area, an avalanche forecaster for the Alaska Avalanche Center, and director of the Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center where he worked for almost thirty years.

I got Tremper's full text, "Staying Alive in avalanche terrain", as well as this condensed version, and the more concise "Snow Sense" by Fredston/Fesler. Among these texts from what seem to be the top experts in the field of avalanche knowledge, I would consider this the advanced level book, with "Staying Alive" the most comprehensive and specialized, and "Snow Sense" the best general introduction on best practices in avalanche terrain for the average outdoor enthusiast.
I've taken the AIARE 1 class and read both Snow Sense and this book. The books complement each other. Snow Sense has chapters to cover snow metamorphosis but the material I felt was a bit disorganized for the first time reader (reading it a couple times again helped).This "Avalanche Essentials" book has most of the important topics cover (except in depth snow metamorphosis), but other than that the materials were well structure and organized. I found myself being able to read this much faster and absorbed the materials better. The fonts, pictures and illustrations in this book are clearer/cleaner than Snow Sense. Also, I took the class and read Snow Sense first so by the time I got to this book it the information is already fairly familiar.I suggest you get both books, they are fairly cheap and will give you a lot of good knowledge if you do any type of backcountry activities in the winter. And take the AIARE 1/2 class.On a couple of private splitboarding trips, all the guides told me that they did their a majority of their planning at home first, figuring out the slopes and aspects to avoid, this book gave the same recommendation and went over a couple examples.
This handbook really helps synthesize the in-depth information from Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain into a tidy product. It boils down the process without over simplifying. Most importantly, it still impresses upon the reader the consequences of their decisions and how to be prepared for when you err.
This seems to be an updating field version of Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain. There is new info about the human factor and using preset rituals to avoid common mistakes in avy terrain. There is still a lot of good insight in here, but overall, a lot of the book is recycled from his previous work.
A more concise/condensed version of the previous book. Tremper has a true gift for explaining things in a way most folks can understand.
If you want to be safe in avalanche country and can't afford or don't have time for a class, this book will get you a long way. It's basically a boiled-down version of his first book, Staying Alive in Avalanche Country, so if you already have that, do not buy this.
This book was for my son so I can't really tell you more than he was pleased with it
Haven't read through yet, but what I've read so far is pretty complete and well laid out! The tone is very alarming, clearly from someone who's experienced avalanches first hand too many times. I believe it's the proper way to approach the study of the snow. A good theoretical content to complete Avalanche Awareness training.And don't forget: practice, practice, practice...
