I've read a couple of other books by this author, and I have to say I think this one is her best yet. I felt the world building was a lot better, the writing tighter, and the plot and characters more interesting. The setting is dystopian -- not sure if it's an alternate world or if there was some sort of catastrophe, but it's definitely not our modern world. There are 2 sets of governments/countries, some technology, but at the same time it still has a pre-industrial feel to it with Fighting arenas gladiator style. I'd say it's in the vein of Mad-Max -- but it's not quite, they're more organized and it's not a total free-for-all.The romance is definitely slow-burn and I'm not sure if it'll end up being an RH, but it seems to be heading that way (hopefully). In this first book, not a lot happens on the romance front -- mainly just the heroine meeting and getting to know all the heroes. There is one kiss, and several almost-kisses, but that's about it.My only complaint was the heroine had several TSTL moments. For someone who is supposed to be pretty smart, she's pretty oblivious to what's going on around her. She takes things at face value and doesn't question what's really going on in any situation. I think the author meant for her to be naive, but there's a fine line between naive and stupid, and she's leaning more towards the latter...For example,< (Mild spoiler) >She doesn't realize, even by the end of the book, that she's being trained as some sort of spy? I mean come on, it was pretty obvious that's what the academy is teaching.Also, another pet peeve of mine was that everyone keeps the heroine in the dark about very important information, for "her own good." Which was stupid. Keeping her ignorant only put her in more danger. Although, when she does find out an important piece of info about her heritage -- and how it puts her life in danger -- she kind of blows it off in another TSTL moment which, predictably, ends badly.Other than those few minor complaints, I really loved this book and can't wait to see what the mystery is with the guys and what it means for their relationship with the heroine. I wouldn't say the book ends on a cliffhanger, exactly, but I wouldn't say it has a happy ending either. Everything is just kind of left open, the questions unanswered, waiting for the next book. Here's hoping the 2nd book comes out soon!
This book frustrated the hell out of me as most books where everyone but the heroine knows Wtf is going on and no one will answer a straightforward question. Malachi's mom left her and Seb completely ignorant in an irritating way and getting answers is like pulling teeth. Aside from the small truth about her father, Malachi knows squat which is dangerous when obviously more than one faction wants her dead. I hate Sargon's mother, but I don't think she had anything to do with the wolves, but it's possible she did.Then there's the obviously supernatural things going on with Sargon, Chett, Ryker and now Picard that I'm not even sure they understand. Those wolves seem like werewolves and I'm wondering if Sargon's group is the same or if they're vampires. I really hope book two has more answers because it seems to many sentences out of Malachi's mouth are questions no one will answer. I'm also hoping Merriela doesn't get her claws into Seb. I'd gag.
I like Malachi though she could be more kick butt. She was presented as a mechanic in the first part of the book, but it never came up again. I would have liked for her to have showed off her skills. I like the guys especially picard. There was a Good amount of world building. This is definitely going to be a series with meat to it as opposed to a book that's all about the sex. If you're looking for substance this is a good book for u.
Pulls you into the story until the end. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next book. My only complaint is the lack of character development which I'm really hoping comes in the next book. Obviously you get to know the h better than the guys but even she could have used a little more depth and the guys well we hardly know anything at the end of the book that we didn't get from the first encounter.Very few interactions that led to getting to know each other and most training was training. Would have liked more but crossing my fingers for the next one to fix it.
Interesting twist to a new society. Something's going on with the guys and it isn't obvious. Will they be altered to a point where they cannot control themselves? The technology is undetermined: cell phones exist but not all have them. There are vehicles, tall buildings and elevators, but no obvious guns or other computers, yet plenty of knives and swords, and Roman style gladiator fighting. Cities as well as agrarian towns. Romance and mystery along with some action. Great combination.
Good start to an interesting story, this is a slow burn reverse harem fantasy story. Seems to be set in some type of dystopian world and I think vampires and werewolves are involved. Characters are interesting and I hope the main female character get stronger.
This book has all my favorites. Secrets that are life and death, political intrigue and maneuvering, and well-written sexual tension. James writes and interesting mix of fantasy and urban fantasy that makes the unfamiliar familiar. Highly recommend.
that there's nothing paranormal for the first 85% of the book, there's no reverse harem or romance, or if the author wants to keep the plot a secret. This book, while well written, could use heavy editing and condensing, as the actual story didn't start until the end of the book. Also, ended on a cliffhanger, so it's more of a serial than an actual book.
