About the Author
Tom Waltz is a former active duty U.S. Marine, Desert Storm vet, and former California National Guard Military Policeman. The best arc in the original black and white Mirage series comprised the Leonardo one-shot and TMNT 10 & 11, that's the Turtles' Dark Phoenix Saga or Empire Strikes Back, it was adapted in the 1990 movie, the 2003 cartoon, and the 2012 cgi show... It was the last time original creators Eastman and Laird really worked together and it was their masterpiece. You can read that in the Ultimate TMNT volume 2, which I highly recommend.Not to spoil that story (or this one) too much, the story dealt with the Foot Clan launching a count attack against the Turtles and their allies after a few minor successes by the Turtles, with Leonardo being a major target for the attack. This story adapts that one very loosely, so I think it's fair to compare the two... but that's definitely to the detriment of this one.The best thing I can say is the book does make the story bigger, filling an entire volume with what was two oversized issues of a comic... but in practice, that means a lot of filler. There's a lot of standing around trying to figure things out where the original story was immediate: it was non-stop action that very intentionally didn't give any time to breath or ask questions. This volume also includes the one-shots from outside the main series, which is good in that those books fill in a lot of gaps that are left but the main book... but it also introduces some inconsistency and make Shredder look like an incompetent leader that deliberately turns his own people against him and takes Bebop and Rocksteady from their video game boss status their introduction gives him back to their goofy 1987 cartoon selves.As with the rest of the IDW series, the story is pretty over-complicated and the art is passable, but inconsistent... Rarely ugly but only approaching greatness when Sophie Campbell and Kevin Eastman step in (although the later has lost a few steps over the years, sadly). The character work in the main story is probably the highlight: Mikey is Mikey, Leo is Leo, Don is Don and they're all lovable, cool, and smartly written and Tom Waltz has done a lot of good work to marry the darker comic book world to the more toyetic cartoon and video game incarnations. There is a lot of good action here and, for better and worse, this is the best I've ever seen from the IDW series.In the end, I feel like every good thing I have to say about this book is balanced out by a qualifier, so I would have to say, I recommend this book only if you've already read the original story arc and you're a real TMNT fan. If you are, you've seen this story done better, but you've definitely seen worse, so... Enjoy!
Finally got the last one till the release of the next volume so happy with my purchases. The binding issues have been fixed so no more worries peeps, also to my surprise this and the next volume come with the tmnt annual which im not too sure what it was originally but I recognized the art immediately and knew they were issues and stories taken from the original turtle comics which is just phenomenal.
Heavily action-packed and fun-filled, this volume collects perhaps the most intense story-arc of this new series as the action reaches a fever pitch and things look dark for our fabulous foursome.IDW has been killing it with this fantastic series and these Hardcovers are great for fans like me (esp when I didn't have the means to buy the singles at the time of original release...and was honestly avoiding doing it because I was a grumpy fanboy!).This follows the same basic format and quality of the first 2 volumes and I'm fine with that because I like the look and quality of this series of HC's - this latest one being great because it has a lot of bonus content and micro-series alongside the main collected ongoing comics which really adds a lot to the experience and fun.
The IDW TMNT has been fantastic so far. The only bad part is that Volume 5 isn't out yet! A great new take on the characters, with some stuff familiar but switched up just enough. If you're a fan of the Turtles from any generation, there's something here for you to enjoy.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book! If you are fan of well written comics this is the book for you! I'm a long time turtles fan and I can't get enough of this reboot by IDW. It is easily my favorite incarnation of the turtles! I also really love the quality of these hardcovers they are putting out.
Gave it to my daughter for a gift. She says its really good.
