I'm showing my gray hair (some of which matches the cover this year...), but even in the electronic era this type of reference is invaluable. It's tiny, light and full of the most rapidly needed information regarding medications (plus some useful algorithms).I find it particularly useful when I'm looking for something 'outside my normal body parts'. The medications are listed by types (i.e. for skin, for gyn, antibiotic etc) so if you are trying to jog your memory on something you can narrow it down. Flipping pages rapidly can still work wonders in figuring things out. Particularly when a patient isn't exactly sure of the name and (gasp) there isn't an electronic record. Yes, there are still times when that happens.Of course I have my favorite electronic resources, but this little book has been, and remains, a useful tool. I'm in a job where I have and may end up again cut off from my electronics and I still need to be able to access the important things. Often these are 'size really does matter' situations--where small, light and portable counts for much!I'm currently buying this book about every 2-3 years just to make sure I have such a useful resource handy in a portable, non-electronic and functional format. This book is on the keeper list for paper resources.Highly Recommended!JTG
I was first introduced to the Tarascon's pocket guides when I started my first nursing job in the ER. (What a fast and furious education THAT was, let me tell you!)The Nursing Educator told me in my first week, "You have to get one of these," and showed me her Tarascon's pocket guide. Then over time I realized a number of the ER physicians used them, too.The Tarascon's Pocket Guide is a real gem. It was a handy gem in the ER, but now that I work in cardiology/telemetry nursing, it's even handier, since the cardiologists and consulting physicians are more prone than ER physicians to be using very new drugs I've never heard of before (e.g. Pradaxa, Victoza).If you're a resident, RN, or practicing MD (inpatient or office-only), you really need this book.The nice thing is it truly is a POCKET guide: it fits in the pockets of my scrub shirts.I have read people's poor reviews complaining about the organization of the book.Those reviewers clearly didn't take the 30 sec. - 2 minutes necessary to read through the first few pages of the pocket guide and learn the "legend" of the book (like the legend of a map). Once you know that -- and it's pretty simple -- you can look new drugs up in the index, e.g. Victoza. When you see that the index lists Victoza at 77b, you know that the Victoza entry in the drug guide is on page 77, at the bottom. (t=top, m=middle, b=bottom).If you take a couple minutes to familiarize yourself with the legend and symbols (it's really not that hard; I don't now what some of these people are talking about) in the first few pages of the Tarascon guide, you'll know how to find drug info for any drug that's listed in the Index in the book.The only downside is, of course, the need to buy a new Tarascon's Pocket Drug Guide every few years, because the newer or newest editions have the most up-to-date drug info. But they're relatively cheap (if you paid $16-20 or more for yours, you paid too much). So that's not that much of an issue.Now if only they had a pocket veterinary drug guide, so I'd know what I can/can't give my cats and dog... oh well. Hopefully someone has written a veterinary drug pocket guide... or will soon!

Medical transcription requires one to have up-to-date drug references at hand, and it's important to be able to find needed information quickly. This is my favorite resource for this.Many times, the one piece of information a medical transcriptionist needs is whether a medication name is a brand or generic, in order to format it correctly. The Pocket Pharmacopoeia's index makes it super-fast and easy to confirm this and to double check spelling. Beyond that, it's a cinch to find information on available formulations, strengths, and common dosages.A unique strong point of this publication is that the medications are arranged by diagnostic area, which can be very helpful. If one knows that, say, the mystery drug is a blood pressure medication, it's easy to skim that section to find the right name.Finally, this book is very reasonably priced for a reference of this type, and I LOVE its "pocket footprint." It takes up very little desktop real estate to keep it right at hand for quick reference.I recommend the Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia to all of my medical transcription staff and students. Try it once, and I predict it will be an annual purchase for you thereafter. To borrow a quotation from an old copy of the book: "It's not what you know, it's how fast you can find the information."
